fixed. since its a connects directly to a freeway and is fully grade separated it should be a motorway.

ya, but take a look at my arguments about primary roads on the Chicago area wiki classification. I was asking for input on those specific roads. trying to find ways of determining why they should be upgraded. Western is similar to Irving being a 4 lane road. but now that opens up 100 other roads that have similar features to also be primary. You could do Ida b wells and michigan, but then should you also do columbus, ontario, ohio, upper wacker, some would think rosevelt is an easy way into the city. would the boulavards need to made primary, or s Jeffery since it leads into lsd. every road that connects to lsd, since those are high traffic routes. basically without that direct set of rules, it snowballs with everyone thinking their preferred route should be labeled as primary.

the state and US routes like North Ave were built to function differently with more lanes and less traffic lights for faster travel times.

It feels like it should be classed differently than other downtown streets only because it is an iconic street. the functionality is the same as other secondary roads downtown and actually slower to use than the other adjacent roads.

ahh, fixed. Tower 12 is the name of the control tower, Wabash-Van Buren Junction was the official name of the actual junction, but the tower numbers "Tower 12 Junction" have become prominent for the common names.

I can see argument there.. since the bus lane physically separates the turn lane from the others. It would be better to map them as such and then it would make more since to combine that small stretch with the turn lane.

I didn't think the lines need combined for 100ft of shared turnlane.

Western is neither a state route or US route. so secondary is a correct tag.

There is still the section where the bridge was that is still marked as no access, under construction, so routing isn't available until that is marked open.

most of the bike lanes downtown are being converted to separated lanes. ive noticed a lot of work needs done on bikemap around chicago

I can agree to the class.

One thing to know is there is no correct way to tag a feature on OSM.
area:highway was resurrected from an abandoned proposal, something not toughly talked though by collaborating mappers, and just one of the reasons it is not rendered by the main maps.
This area was mapped using the
highway=footway + area=yes method which is also commonly used. Linear paths were added because path area=yes were not routable features and was requested. But if you would also want to add area:highway as an additional tag along with highway=footway + area=yes that would be ok.

i made a page for the Chicago metro area for discussion. osm.wiki/Chicago_Area/Highway_Classification

The discussion and collaboration died when OSM community ambassador Dirk Munson left the company. I havn't seen any meetups since.

Was sticking to US and State routes marked as primary. Major buisness lined roads that traverse the highways and rivers as secondary, other major roads and county routes as tertiary, separated highways as motorway, and partially separated highways / connector highways as trunk. At least that is what is was originally within the Chicago area until someone started playing around with an unfinished proposal.
I've toyed a bit upgrading some of the loop area streets as primary for connectivity, part of michigan avenue, ohio street, ida b wells. but at what point do you not just mark all of the major roads as primary? Those roads dont nessesarily mean it is the prefered rout of everyone, or that its even the fastest route though the area. The US/state routes from my experience are actually better to drive because they have more lanes and less traffic lights along those routes. It really needs to be discussed a bit more.

osm.wiki/United_States_roads_tagging/Routes#Honorary_and_Tourist_Routes I did give it an extra HIST as that is what the signage says.
