thanks for your feedback. Here you can find the current valid rules for taging riverbanks:

waterway=riverbank

According to this page taging rivers as water is only a proposal with little support, which makes not much sense also for my understanding.

On this page you can also find hints about how to avoid huge relations and intersecting ways. These are the real issues river taging has, especially in the Amazon region.
