Andy, when the de-bugger is turned on for iD it automatically suggests operator:wikidata=* and some other corrections (capitalisation, proper name, etc.) tags automatically. Previously, it was also suggesting operator:wikipedia=* Adopting those suggestions was usually the right thing to do.

However, operator:wikipedia=* is problematic, as it is language dependent. So, for the Superdry clothing brand or Nissan cars, it was suggesting the Japanese-language wikipedia pages, even if the OSM object was in the UK or Ireland.

Adding operator:wikipedia=* was discontinued. Keeping operator:wikipedia=* was slightly untidy, hence the changes by the user endim8.

A few years ago, for some reason (I presume there was a genuine reason) wikipedia:[Language code]=[Topic] was changed to wikipedia=[Language code]:[Topic] If that change hadn't happened, the knock-on changes here wouldn't have needed to happen.
