Yeah, and we mapped the bus stops node/13228866246/history/1

but it's not an active train station, so no railway=station

Hey Danny, thanks building up the sidewalks and improving the alignments! When adding sidewalks like way/1459719351, it would be good to also update roadways like way/35350684 to have sidewalk:both=separate (or sidewalk:left/sidewalk:right=* if sidewalk is only on one side).

I also encourage you to add is_sidepath:of:name=* tag to the sidewalk way, so that the street name can be used when routing pedestrians :) see way/1444277024 for an example

Hey GrannySmugg, thanks for the edits to sidewalks and crossings! When adding sidewalks like way/1459700663 please also make sure to update roadways like way/299599352 to have sidewalk:both=separate (or sidewalk:left/sidewalk:right if sidewalk is only on one side).

Hi anotherToad, just letting you know if you haven't seen, we're discussing road classification (including of Yonge Street) in https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/southern-ontario-road-classification-ongoing-thread/139281 - please join in!

Oops, sorry, I see now that "Sette Productions" came from a much older changeset.

However it remains the case that it was in the wrong place for its address (even numbers are north side of the street), and 148 Yorkville has actually been razed for redevelopment since node/4462028723/history/1 was added in 2016

175781364

hey, thanks. is there a pedestrian crossing too?

Hey Nate, when adding sidewalks like way/1457613663 please also make sure to update roadways like way/35797445 to have sidewalk:both=separate (or sidewalk:left/sidewalk:right if sidewalk is only on one side).

I also encourage you to add is_sidepath:of:name tag to the sidewalk way, so that the street name can be used when routing :) see way/1444277024 for an example

Hi,

I have started a thread in the forum for discussion on road classification in southern Ontario https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/southern-ontario-road-classification-ongoing-thread/139281 - we're starting to discuss what the criteria for primary vs secondary should be in cities. I wanted to invite you to participate as you've been editing road categories in Ontario.

Hello,

Generally the usual way of tagging GO stations is that we have a node (or an area) representing the entire station, with station metadata like codes (e.g. ref:go_transit=LA), and then the station/ticket building can be separate and tagged just building=train_station. In this change, you made the station building the station, and deleted the station node node/88576501/history/8, losing the station codes and the consistency with other stations. Is there a particular reason?

Is there a local guideline that roads connecting two freeways are to be highway=primary roads?

I struggle to see network significance here. Whoop-Up Drive has been tagged as motorway because it is a dual carriageway with two interchanges (motorway tag is based on built form), but it clearly has only a local role, connecting city centre with the university and residential neighbourhoods. And similarly the stretch of University Drive you've upgraded here connects the Crowsnest with the university and residential neighbourhoods. I really doubt anyone would exit Crowsnest eastbound at University Drive and then take Whoop-Up Drive to get to downtown Lethbridge.

There's no through traffic function, no higher-order destinations here...

Hi,

Major Mac doesn't meet any of the usual criteria for primary roads in southern Ontario: it's not a provincial highway nor a former one, it's not clearly more important than surrounding grid roads, 3 lanes is already tagged as lanes=3. It is a regional road and most of these are tagged as secondary.

More importantly, I would encourage you to not change road classifications without discussion with the local community.

Also, *if* the Allen is to be primary, please note that ramps like way/124003604 should be tagged highway=primary_link, not highway=primary

175462379

I live in Parkdale

I am not convinced that 80 km/h speed limit is a big factor here. It's still a freeway. There are other freeways in Ontario that have max 80, like the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the freeway part of the Hanlon Expressway (the latter one is even a provincial highway)

The highway classification in southern Ontario has been generally:
- motorway: freeways (dual carriageway, access controlled, grade-separated interchanges)
- trunk: it's a bit of a mess but generally non-freeway roads that are part of the National Highway System Core routes
- primary: non-freeway provincially-owned highways, short links between those ("Connecting Links"), and other notable major roads, especially former provincial highways (e.g. former Highways 2, 5, 8)
- secondary: ordinary grid arterials in GTA, and regional/county roads

The Allen, the Gardiner, the DVP, the Red Hill, Black Creek Drive before Lawrence are all in a similar boat of being municipally-owned (for now), partly lower speed limits, but they're still freeways, with full access control and interchanges. Changing just the Allen makes it unusual. If you want to change all of those to primary, it would be best to discuss this a bit more widely before making the change, for example at the Canadian forum: https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/ca/95

(Responded via DM about Major Mac)

The other problem with using any City of Toronto classification for Allen Road is that in OSM, highway=motorway is invariably used for _quality_ of the road, not for its importance or any official classification. A dual carriageway access-controlled road with grade separated interchanges is an OSM motorway. The only exceptions are very short stretches (only one or sometimes only two interchanges), but this doesn't apply to the Allen.

175462379

City of Toronto would never tell you that a road is classified as a "motorway" because that's not a term used in Canada.

The City's road classification system https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/traffic-management/road-classification-system/maps-and-indices/ considers the Allen to be a "City Expressway", same as Gardiner and DVP.

For that matter the other categories in City's classification are "major arterial", "minor arterial", "collector", and "local", so I am curious that they told you any road was classified as a "primary road".

But in any event, if you want to use City as a source, use its road classification, not 311...

Hello, can you elaborate on what kind of sources, guidelines, or local knowledge you used to change the classification of this road?
