With the better weather I managed to get out a couple of times this week and have now completed Paignton to a reasonable level. Could really use some decent aerial imagery though to trace in some awkward areas of woodland but apart from that it's not too bad.

I'm planning to move on to Brixham next which is currently ~25% mapped and time allowing hopefully get that done in the next couple of months.

It would be really nice to attract some more mappers in South Devon as there is still a huge amount to be done.

Ich habe mich heute an die Arbeit gemacht, die Stadt Greiz im OSM-Projekt etwas besser aussehen zu lassen. Ziel ist, bis ende 2008 alle Straßen, Plätze, Rad- und Wanderwege sowie die wichtigsten PoI zu veröffentlichen.

Angesichts der Ausgangslage ist das eine Menge Arbeit und ich würde mich über Hilfe freuen.

So ... nachdem ich vor zwei Wochen hier nach Bad Tölz gezogen bin und mit Erschrecken festgestellt habe, dass hier noch sehr sehr viel sehr weiß ist, habe ich heute angefangen und bin mit Fahrrad und Nokia E90 die ersten Wohngebiete abgefahren und habe sie gemapped.

Ich habe mir vorgenommen, im Laufe des Jahres so nach und nach ganz Bad Tölz zu kartografieren (kann ja nicht angehen, dass wir hier den großen Städten so viel hinterher sind). Falls das hier jemand liest, der mir dabei helfen will:

Ich hatte es schon in meinem ersten Beitrag erwähnt, aber ich wollte hierfür doch einen eigenen Aufmacher, da es meine erste, fertig Ortschaft in OSM ist. Dazu kommt noch, daß es mein Heimatort ist.

Also, Metterich ist fertig. Ich habe nicht nur alle Straßen, sondern auch noch ein paar Gebäude, Plätze, Wege und unseren Sportplatz eingetragen.

So, am 9. Juni 2008 habe ich mir auch so ein GPS Wunderding angeschafft, ein Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. Ich wollte explizit ein handliches Gerät für den Einsatz draußen, hauptsächlich zum wandern und Fahrrad fahren und es sollte potentiell auch für OSM geeignet sein, was aber erst mal nur ein wages Ziel war, da ich hier noch keinerlei Erfahrung hatte. Aber nach Ansicht der noch fast leeren Eifel wollte ich hier mithelfen.

Am nächsten Tag habe ich erstmal mit unserer Straße vorm Haus angefangen und sie online via Potlatch eingetragen. Das ging doch einfacher als ich dachte, obwohl die Bedienung sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig ist und siehe da, am Mittwoch war die Straße auch brav eingetragen. Tags darauf bin ich dann unser komplettes Dorf Metterich abgefahren und habe mich dann an JOSM gewagt. Da es unter Java läuft konnte ich es auch unter Linux installieren. Die Gewöhnung an JOSM ging schnell und ab sofort ist es mein bevorzugter Editor. Ruckzuck war Metterich eingehackt - nur war es gerade erst Donnerstag, d.h. es war noch nichts zu sehen. Das Neuzeichnen nur einmal pro Woche ist m.E. zu selten und wird hoffentlich irgendwann auf mehrere Male pro Woche erhöht. Das würde auch der Benutzerfreundlichkeit zugute kommen.

Dann kam der Hammer, als mein neues GPS schon nach wenigen Tagen den Geist komplett aufgegeben hat. Es fing damit an, daß es sofort ausging, nachdem man es mit USB verbunden hatte. Wenig später, ließ sich überhaupt nicht mehr einschalten. Letztendlich habe ich es direkt an Garmin eingeschickt und bekam von dort ein Neugerät als Ersatz zugeschickt. Hoffentlich hält das länger.

Es kann also weitergehen...

Well, I've added a few spots in Beijing and have some more work to do on the traces I took over there during the last few days. I'm back in my home town of Sydney, Australia now & have begun adding & correcting things here.
I an really see the potential in OSM and have spoken to a few people about it, so hopefully they too will start adding to the maps around the planet.

Essendo di passaggio a Treste ho approfittato per mappare la ferrovia e parte del giardino del castello di Miramare. Nei prossimi giorni spero di inserire la traccia e taggare il tutto.

Had to be at the airport yesterday. Gave me a chance to track few important secondary, and some primary streets.

On my way there, I got Czyżewskiego and a missing part of Słowackiego between Matarnia and the airport.

Going back, I got north-going lane of the Aleja Rzeczypospolitej / Chłopska.

In Sopot, got Bitwy pod Płowcami, Grunwaldzka, Powstańców Warszawy, parts of Haffnera and Goyki, and then Armii Krajowej.

Also traced few horizontal streets like 3 Maja, Polna, Opacka, form my last bike trip.

Still need to upload the .gpx sources. Soon.

Seem to be gathering data faster than I can input it at the moment. I've just had a late night editing session to try to catch up. Yesterday's Herne Hill data, and some older Rotherhithe data (our London mapping evenings)

Still to do: some other obscure bits of London mapping plus my holiday mapping.

Six jours dans la voiture, quatre soirées avec JOSM et voilà, les 3400 km sur le trajet Karlsruhe, Bâle, Genève, Annecy, Grenoble, Mont Ventoux, Orange, Gorges de l'Ardèche, Gorges du Tarn, Millau, Roquefort, Carcassonne, Andorra, Lourdes, Clermont-Ferrand, Moulins, Nancy, Saverne, Karlsruhe sont dans l'OSM. On n'a pratiquement pas utilisé les autoroutes (qui sont déjà très bien saisies), mais pourtant il y avait encore pas mal de nationales et plein de départementales à introduire dans OSM.
Puisque c'était moi qui conduisais, il n'était pas faisable de marquer plus que les changements de routes. En plus avec une carte Michelin âgée de quelques ans, on a comparé les numéros des routes afin de corriger des déclassements des routes nationales qui ont eu lieu dans les années passées et qui ont été inscrites sous leurs anciens noms dans OSM et chez Michelin.
Il y avait des dizaines et des dizaines de villages par lesquelles on était passé et qui n'étaient pas encore dans OSM. Dommage, pas le temps de les inscrire. Mais au moins on a élargit (ou même initié) le réseau des rues dans certaines villes et villages où on passait à pied: Florac, Carcassonne, Lourdes, Moulins, etc. En ce qui concerne le Bas-Rhin du nord, le réseau des départementales se ferme peu-à-peu.
Voilà, maintenant tout est là, on peut partir pour un autre voyage ;-)

Completed Royston, Hertfordshire today with the central area and the housing estates off London Road, Barkway Road and south of Newmarket Road. It was a gorgeous day for cycling, but quite tough as well, as this part of Royston climbs as you leave the town centre. This means that every time I left a housing estate spine road, dead end spurs go steeply down or up so I was continually and unavoidably gaining height and and losing it again straight away. Nevertheless, 3.5 hours was enough to finish off the town.

The inability to get Landsat data in JOSM is hampering me somewhat with getting good outlines for some of the extensive woodlands on the south eastern edge of town and the southern edge of Therfield Heath to the west of the town. I've guessed for now.

There's still some surveyed streets awaiting upload by Daniel in the north-east, north of the railway.

Meanwhile i did manage to convert osm to gpx using JOSM. However, for some reason Mapsource cant open the gpx file. Any suggestions why that might be?

Hi everybody,

I'm new at this whole OMS stuff (great innitiative!!), but i would really like to use some of the maps that are not yet in gpx format. So, my question is how to convert oms data into gpx. So far I have tried cgpsmapper and sendmap (which in my ingnorancy i considered possibly apt programs for this conversion), but i have failed miserably...

So, i bet those are very basic issues for you guys, but if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it!!

Ich habe gestern beim aufnehmen von GSM-Tracks im Hofgarten Düsseldorf einen Gedenkstein für Louise Dumont (1862-1932), der Gründerin des Düsseldorfer Schauspielhauses, entdeckt.

Darauf stand ein Spuch, der auch für die OSM-Gemeinschaft gelten kann:

"Warum sucht ich den Weg so sehnsuchtsvoll,
wenn ich ihn nicht den Brüdern zeigen soll."

Took advantage of the wonderful weather and long evenings by going for a ride from Burton out to Ashby, Coalville and Loughborough - taking in as much of NCN52 and NCN6 as I could.

NCN52 is now done from the village of Heather to its northern terminus. NCN6 now has a continuous route from Foxton (near Market Harborough), through Leicester, Loughborough, and Derby, to Nottingham- bar a few hundred yards in Blaby (southern Leicester). Some lovely cycling, too - though the route through Coalville is definitely incomplete: a lonely Sustrans milepost stands in the town centre by an impressive bridge over a (barely used) railway, but there's no signposted route either side!

Presently working on building up an accurate map of the routes of the national cycle network in Bristol city centre. No-where seems to have got it right, so instead I have taken to documenting the physical signs to determine the route.
