The directions offered on the OpenStreetMap.org site show correctly.

The path was mapped originally as a track but that was 8 years ago. If you are using an Openstreetmap on your gps it should not route a car down a footway or path as they are only for pedestrians and cycles? Google maps routes a car correctly though the roadways but also offers pedestrian route along the path but it is clear that it for a pedestrian.

Dan Murphy's was already mapped and tagged correctly. Can you remove you node.

you need to rejoin the path to the footway as the it is a fault with the GPS or it's settings if it routes a car along footways or paths, not a fault withe mapping. They are joined so that pedestrian routing works.
You also need to add a joining node at every place where the footways cross other ways unless they don't meet such as at a bridge or tunnel. This is also for correct routing.

I notice that Malabar Headland Walking Path is tagged highway=footway. In Australia most normally tag these as highway=path plus surface=ground or other if it is not paved with concrete or asphalt or similar. Most use highway=footway for the concrete or similar paths that are usual in towns. I am unfamiliar with the Malabar Headland Walking Path so just for info.
