Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [1]

Posted by marczoutendijk on 9 March 2015 in English. Last updated on 23 April 2017.

I will start a new series of comments on the current mapping problems and curiosities that I encounter with OSM.
On this wikipage it can be seen that the preferred way of tagging the entrance of a building is by means of the entrance=* tag and that the building=entrance tag is now deprecated.
With OpenPoiMap I began to explore the world to see how this is being carried out. I started with this code in the User Pois box (without the numbers, they are there to help me clarify the images that follow).

  • building=entrance [1]
  • entrance=yes [2]
  • entrance=main [3]

OpenPoiMap - aka Taglocator

Posted by marczoutendijk on 17 February 2015 in English.

After almost 3 months of work, development reached version 1.0! Also I have changed its name from Taglocator to OpenPoiMap which is maybe more descriptive for the non-mapper.

And it is now available under its own domain name: http://openpoimap.org

Compared to the first version many improvements have taken place (thanks to the community) and it is fully described in a wiki.

The tool is handy for mappers, to check their own work and see what is missing from the map in the areas they know, but it is at least as useful for the layman mapuser who just wants to know the nearest Busstop, Bookstore, Library, Restaurant, Pub, Cinema, Hotel, Giftstore, Optician, Monumental Tree, Picnic, Windmill, Museum, Viewpoint, Parking, Bicycle rental. . . (not necessarily in that order!)

But if you want to check which Bar has no Telephone number, that’s also possible!

Many improvements are yet to come, and development continues. Give it a try!

Taglocator

Taglocator

For some time now I have been working on taglocator. A tool that helps in locating where tags are to be found on the map. It is not unique, you can get the same results with many other tools (like overpass-turbo), but the difference (as usual) is in the user interface. Here is a screenshot: screenshot Start up the tool at: http://mijndev.openstreetmap.nl/~marczoutendijk/taglocator/osmtags.html

  1. zoom in to your location (or use the search box)
  2. select something from the top left menu (Shop in the screenshot above)
  3. select something from the list on the right (Books/Stationary in the screenshot)

Watch for the small circles to popup on the screen and click within one of those circles to get more info on the node you selected. You can edit with a number of (preselected) OSM editors. When a website or wikipedia link is available, you can choose that as well. Taglocator is still in development and your comments (or wishes) are welcome.
