My first edits. Oliver Street was misnamed as Oliver Road so I fixed that. Also added suburb name Freshwater because it's not appearing in some maps. It was recently renamed from Harbord and there is confusion around. The tag "Freshwater (Previously Harbord)" sometimes appears when viewing maps but wasn't there to be edited. Perhaps an experienced user will know how to fix that.

Hi Afni.

The 'name' tag is used for the main name on the ground of a feature. The old name can be stored using the 'old_name' tag. More details here osm.wiki/index.php/Key:name

By tagging a road with both of these tags, then when someone draws a map, they have the choice if they want to display the name, or if they want to do a "Name (previously old_name)" type thing.

Hi Rorym,

Thanks for pointing me to those tag comments. In the case of "Oliver Road" v "Oliver Street" I don't see that as appropriate because it has never been "Road" and always been "Street". The "old" name was actually an error by a previous editor and was never used locally or officially. So in this case I don't see a need for a tag comment to explain an error.
I see the value of the comment tag in the case of "Freshwater" v "Harbord", but as I wrote, the editable map didn't have the suburb name at all. I don't know how the label "Freshwater (Previously Harbord)" was being applied if it wasn't available in the edit window.

Hi again Rorym,

I poked about some more in practice mode and found the tag "Freshwater (Previously Harbord)", so my mistake as I'm still learning the rules. It looks like the suburb is literally named as "Freshwater (Previously Harbord)". I'm using the Potlatch interface on OpenStreetMap, how do I apply the instuctions at ? I'm puzzled because opening the tag for editing gives fields into which people are simply entering "plain language" text without any codes.
