About: Large volume of small edits

I agree small edits are great. Often the notes that are posted with an edit only apply to a part of it. One part can be mapped using Bing one part local knowledge or GPS or even estimation so small edits can have better information. Big edits can sometimes get lost or fail part way through if you lose power or connection which can be annoying. So carry on with small edits. Happy Mapping Andy

St Edmund’s College, Hertfordshire

My 1950s childhood was spent in Godmanchester, once a Roman town and major junction of several Roman roads Ermine included. Since retiring i have occupied myself mapping (mainly footpaths) and walking the countryside either alone or with some of many active Ramblers groups in the area. Ermine street passes through the old county town of Huntingdon and heads towards Peterborough as the A1 which leaves Ermine Street and doesn’t rejoin the line of the old A1 until Stamford. What surprises is that for this ten miles of so there isn’t much left of Ermine street, what happened to it? did the Nene crossing become impassable? Did a past landowner make everyone unwelcome. Fortunately the last few miles is now a lovely public footpath through Burleigh Park. In the 1970s my Mum and Dad would visit places of interest in his old Morris Oxford car, Dad recognised someone in Burleigh House and said “Didn’t you used to be Lord Burleigh?” the man replied with a smile “ I still am! “ . Dad was a big fan of football and the Olympics and that Lord Burleigh was the gold medalist hurdler of the 1930s , one of the two athletes who’s stories were later told in the film “Chariots of Fire”. Happy Days and Happy Mapping.

Coronavirus!!

Thank You. Almost ten years i snapped my achilles tendon. I had already discovered OSM and had been recording the walks and rambles as GPXes i had been thinking that i might walk them again or map them on OSM. The enforced convalescence of a couple of months in a cast prompted me to get to grips with an editor and start mapping the hundred or so traces i had stocked up. Ten years ago we didn’t have the benefit of any aerial backgrounds, so a GPX was almost the only way. If you need to occupy your time and you have not edited yet why don’t you get started?

Please help add buildings in Newport!

Sorry link didn’t work north side of hendry drive? i assume they are terraced houses , i sometimes put all the numbers on the block which seem to work in the search ok.

Please help add buildings in Newport!

I have just drawn 12 or so outlines here any good? osm.org/go/euO53ZsRE–?m=

Please help add buildings in Newport!

Many of us can add building outlines from bing or DG but we can only guess what the building is, is it just a roof, a house, a shop, a factory, or does it still exist?. If you are happy to tag stuff i will happily trace a few outlines. Do you have a few street gpx traces just to check alignment of Bing/DG before we do too much over misplaced images. Happy Mapping

I can see a dash cam with a gps could be a very useful piece of equipment. Thanks Happy Mapping

My first attempt at mapping

We should thank Robert Whittaker for levering the info from councils and Barry Cornelius for his work in formatting it. (I hope i got this correct :) ? https://osm.mathmos.net/ Barry Cornelius https://www.rowmaps.com/kmls/

Thank you both. I have found this info very useful . Andy

My first attempt at mapping

Welcome. I started recording GPXes over ten years ago and eventually i uploaded almost all to OSM, 1000+ of them now, all walked. I use Potlatch2 and like Hendric who uses JOSM it can show all traces in the same area. I map a line that is an average, Bing is also a good help and once aligned with the same average is probably the best way to get best detail. I take JPEGs of official notices of pathlines and changes and using the gates, stiles and filger posts confirms rights of way. In England and probably Wales the councils maintain their Definitive Maps which may be available online which SHOULD show the latest changes. There is a source of County Council Rights of Way in KLM form I’ve seen somewhere, i’ll remember and add it. Happy Mapping

Too bad I don't have a camera rig

Good work. You have inspired me into doing similar ( or trying to ) with the walk traces that i have uploaded.

Mapperley’s Lime Tree Gardens Soakaway

Hi Alex Thank you for more interesting posts. I have mapped some similar holes. They are very common in Cambridgeshire, most new build developments that cover much area have then. I believe even single houses must have soakaways, to attenuate downpours that can overwhelm drains and waterways then flood property. As a child in the 1950s we encountered “swamps” that were just bits of flooded fields that rarely dried up, I suppose it was natures way of coping with droughts. Draining fields and fast run off in developed areas as caused flood problems on it’s way to the sea which as brought about the need to manage heavy rains or fast thaws. The larger flood alleviation or attenuation basins ( which were tags i was advised to use) have, or will become lovely mini natural havens for wildlife and hopefully stay as such, I really like them. They work best, in my opinion, if they a gently sloping depression as the deeper, steeper ones “must?” have high people proof fences which is unfortunate. Happy Mapping Andy

Coordinates on openstreetmap.org

Degrees.degrees works fine, is simpler to use in my opinion. there seems to be lots of coord converters on the net if you have the need. Best we stick to the system used here from the start.

Useless data that only clutters the map and often geometrically wrong

It may seem excessive or not even technically correct but some will find it useful. If the park is huge it will help visitors find their way around, so improve it if you can otherwise just leave it as it is.
