My November 2020 in OSM

It looks like that twitter thread is gone. Not everything on the internet lasts forever. 🙂 Sorry.

German Postal Win

(yes obviously the second line was my actual wallet name, Deutsche Posdt can’t read Ogham)

Launching an open mapping hub in Asia - what's the starting focus for HOT?

w.r.t. “hOSM” etc: To prevent miscommunications and misinterpretations, I’ll just say that the OSMF Board (mostly me now) & the HOT Board are working constructively on this issue right now. The situation is actively changing day-by-day. I am confident that things will work out well. 🙂

I am learning how to map

Welcome!

Launching an open mapping hub in Asia - what's the starting focus for HOT?

I think it’s a bad idea to use this name. There’s plenty of OSM actors in the humanitarian space, it’s not all under the HOT umbrella, and “hOSM” could confuse people.

Adding the #newbie tag when making changes on OpenStreetMap + Tips for New Mappers?

Welcome to OSM! iD adds the mapper’s “edit count” to a changeset, which can be usefult to know that someone is new to OSM.

“Be bold in what you add, and cautious in what you delete” is good advice for starting in OSM. We all make mistakes at first.

OSMF board elections

The OSMF Board has published it’s Conflict of Interest Policy on osmfoundation.org.

Regarding the Call to Take Action and Confront Systemic Offensive Behavior in the OSM Community

(I’m fellow OSMF Board member) Yep, the meeting times are mostly to suit the current board members. We’ll see what the board looks like soon. We do want to be open accessible. Last night we investigated Microsoft translators live translation app, which might help people who aren’t fluent in English. Trying different timezones might be interesting.

Why WOMEN are pushing for a safe and inclusive space in OSM

Streetcomplete can’t be part of the solution to the problem if you’re going to remain true and pure and sound according to the activist point of view. Why? Well I’m afraid that it confirms “the dominant voice / contributor in OSM: white, Western and male.” The main author is German (and thus western), so far as I am aware male, and given the ethnic makeup of Germany there’s a good chance they are white as well. It is thus a tool of the patriarchy.

You made that up 🤣. No-one is saying that. C’mon if I’m an activist, I might know a thing or two about this, and hence why I know “judged by the standards the activists use” is rubbish.

Why WOMEN are pushing for a safe and inclusive space in OSM

@Yury Yatsynovich, from your photo you look male, likewise @Zverik. Tell me again how gender isn’t observable?

@Zverik Have you seen StreetComplete? It has several very fast & quick ways to add lit tag. I’ve been using it lots lately. We can eventually get it all mapped!

(Not gonna touch @user_5589’s “contribution” 🙄🙄)

OSMF 2020 entre inquiétude et déception / OSMF 2020 between concern and disappointment

[3]. Unless I’m mistaken, only one member of the board is involved, but the exchange is particularly enlightening: Rory McCann summarizes the board’s approach to funding decisions in terms of what “sounds good” and he fails to understand the expectations summarized by Imagico in the sentence “document and publish the key parts of the decision making process, in particular risk analysis that has been made on social implications and economic risk”.

OK, I think I did address this comment ( osm.org/user/imagico/diary/393808#comment47892 ), but to spell it out:

I have used osm2pgsql & Nominatim for years and years, both personally and professionally. I used to use Potlatch as my first editor. I know how useful and important it is. I know how a lot of open source is underfunded and underdeveloped. I know that FLOSS devs often suffer burnout. I see big companies being able to steamroll through open source because they can throw money at things. So when I see the oppertunity to support it, I support it.

I believe that meets this request. Christoph (or you) never did define how many words were required. I could write a 10,000 word document on how useful osm2pgsql etc. are, but then I don’t have the time to work on other board stuff, and I think it’s better to work on other issues like take over protection, reviewing local chapter applications etc.

Two years later, the OSMF does not seem to be better armed to counter this danger, and rather less so, having less cash and greater financial needs to maintain its servers. Draft solutions had been proposed, but were not taken up and implemented

I started the conversation about AoA changes to maker it harder to “buy the OSMF”, and I plan to email some more drafts, and have an AoA amendment prposal for everyone to vote on. I want to do something for this.

Distance to nearest building in North America

@Jakuje Thanks for alerting me. I have fixed it.

My August 2020 in OSM

@dieterdreist “compared to the number of female mappers” You haven’t provided any decent evidence for how many mappers are male/female/not-male/etc, so you shouldn’t really claim that.

My August 2020 in OSM

This diary entry & some of these comments made it to WeeklyOSM № 531.

My August 2020 in OSM

@mmd Sorry for the miscommunication, we had a preferred candidate in mind, rather than an open interview process. Were yout thinking of applying?

My new image-collection camera plus some OSMF Board work

The OSMF also awarded a microgrant to StreetComplete, another OSM editing app.

My August 2020 in OSM

@Zvierik: Glad to hear. In case you missed it, there was a thread on the osmf-talk@ mailing list about iD hiring.

Thoughts on the how and where of the OSMF starting to hand out money in the OSM community

but you still do not seem to understand what i mean

Correct. I, unfortunately, do not understand what you mean. I would like to understand. Can you please explain?

You now seem to suggest that my recommendation can only be met by publishing all your IRC logs

I said no such thing. Please do not misrepresent me as some extremist. I honestly do not know what would meet your standards, and in an attempt to reach mutual understanding, I attempted to understand you, and offered several suggestions, like extreme examples of publishing IRC logs, or detailing interactions at sub-hour granuality.

I am not going to publish all my IRC/IM/chat logs, especially if you won’t do the same. 😉

Thoughts on the how and where of the OSMF starting to hand out money in the OSM community

You previously required that one provide a “moral defense of universal behavior regulation”, so you can’t get away with saying “This is self-evident!”. 🙂 Especially since I keep saying “No, it’s not, please define your standard”. I provided a reply, and you haven’t defined your standard, nor explicitly pointed out what my reply lacks. How many words do you expect? What accuracy of dates do you expect? (Do you want me to say “on [date] [time], I heard about [topic] from [person]”, or can I say “A few weeks ago, [name] said [topic]”). What level of publicity do you want? All my IRC logs? If you can’t define your standard, it just looks like you’re setting up an unwinnable standard.
