Changeset When Comment
71781976

To my (local) knowledge, JFSC is the short_name, not the proper name.

At least set official_name to the expended version.

71781942

Probably wise to set short_name=JFSC .

“it is (among other ways) done with photos collected in Fody project”

Should've set source to specify that, then.

“I was first thinking about a revert, but in this case, where board_type=yes makes no sense, I concluded it will be better to leave it as is and not create another large changeset.”

Changesets affect mappers, but data affects everyone.

Better another changeset to revert non-CZ boards, than incorrect data.

At least board_type=yes is a clue / signal that it needs more attention.

If arbitrarily set to something else, how would anyone know? For example, it would no longer show up as a StreetComplete quest.

Re description(:*) (versus note:*) usage: description=*

Besides, I often enough see changesets correcting *:[country-code] to *:[language-code].

117434229

“Think note(s) are meant for mappers”

Yes, which is why I suggested them. If the feature (building?) is a bunker is a concern of mappers, not descriptive info for map users (the description tag is user-facing, in apps, while note & fixme are not).

“description:abc (where abc is the country code, think it's here fi) is as permanent informational.”

To my understanding, the suffix is language code, not country-code. The description text should be similar, just translated between languages.

Description is for further info (beyond the name & type), but in this case I don't think the general public need to be made aware that we mappers are unsure if that element is a bunker or something else. Mappers with local knowledge (or who are willing to research) are needed to resolve the question.

“best guess”

Guessing is to be avoided on OSM.

“according to the iD editor suggested”

That doesn't make them correct, though. Like you said, they were suggestions.
Sounds like tagging for the editor.

“updating automatically”

So an automated / mechanical edit, which wasn't discussed with the local community. There's a strict policy against that.

More generally:
Some of those elements I had carefully surveyed (which takes a considerable amount of time).

Many things are different in Jersey than in larger nations.
Bus stops, for example: the only things I would consider to be platforms, are at the bus station. Not even most terminus stops have one. Most stops have no shelter, or even a layby for the bus to pull into, off the road. Most stops are literally just some paint on the road, which is where the bus stops. Otherwise, you wouldn't even know that a bus stops there. Often, passengers must wait on the road itself (no sidewalk).

branch=international simply makes no sense at all.

However, the added wiki tags seem OK. That's one thing which is tricky (or time-consuming) to determine, while surveying. A suppose I should send a pull-request to the name-suggestion-index or the presets which Vespucci uses.

While I freely admit that there is much work to do here (which a few of us locals do our best with), I don't think that drive-by ad-hoc changes help, especially in terms of consistency & quality.

I also tire of mappers using Jersey to pad out their HDYC stats (country list).

Useful work would include adding buildings. Many remain unmapped. Especially rural. Though, be mindful that aerial imagery, here, isn't recent (or high-resolution). Nor aligned too well (GNSS tracks / traces is something else I'm working on).

Lots of other things require detailed surveying. I wish I had infinite time & resources to do everything quickly, but I don't (12 hours out surveying disappears quick, with not a vast amount to show for it). Current priorities (for me) are the likes of defibrillators (most are not added, and the incomplete dataset (published by the local bureaucrats) is quite inaccurate), decommissioned amenity=telephones and closed amenity=post_boxes.

Lots of other (especially bigger) stuff is in flux (lots of construction, because we have a housing shortage crisis); more than a handful of us can keep up with.
It's all far from ideal.

“strange board_type value 'yes'”

As a surveyor, my guess / assumption would be that they either didn't know, were in a rush (I've added barrier=yes, before), or the board-type was unclear (from the selection in whatever presets the mapper used).

So, if you're presuming to set a more specific type, what's your source for that? Surely it would require a survey?

“I have ascended.

Far beyond human understanding, my soul now lies, far, far away.”

OSM is beneath you, then.

“Who is Candice?”

Probably an associate of Joe, see changeset/117062613

While this may be a metadata-only prankster, that would be rare. Sloppy metadata usually means sloppy work / changes.

Since unknown sources can't be verified, the changesets should be reverted.

“Netherlands”

Oh, quite right. Ignore my comment, then.

I'll try to avoid such requests for wide-spanning relations.

“what is a changeset?”

Either you're trolling, or shouldn't be editing OSM.

Follow the link above, scroll to the top. Start reading.

Don't make any more changes until you've comprehended all of it.

“when making edits people are generally offline in the middle of nowhere”

Um, few people might be, but the vast majority are sat at their desk using iD or similar.

How did you travel so far, without ever going near an airport or city / town (each of which has 802.11)?

“You can only ask people to invest so much time, since it is voluntarily.”

Yet, you notified Western Europe and NW Africa with your changeset.

OSM is a community, which requires consideration & coöperation.

A few minutes of your time is not more valuable than the time of others (who are also volunteers).

If it's such trouble for you, then I suggest doing a proper job on fewer elements, instead of half-arsing many (continent-spanning) elements.

“These rules do not fit great with the way people add changes.”

That's circular, and self-contradictory. Flouting the rules is OK because people flout the rules?(!)

“I will need some manual extra time to adjust the whole changeset”

Quality work takes time & effort. OsmAnd allows selective uploading.

Some of the replacement values are dubious. Particularly for public_transport.

Also, branch=international on a bank?
