Quite a productive morning (after I eventually found the cafe!)... but then I lost half my notes, so had to retrace my steps in the afternoon. And by then it was time to go and catch the train home. Gah.

Still, for the benefit of anyone else sniffing around the same area, I've done the area I signed up for on the board (39), and a bit of the one to the south: the Rea Valley Drive estate, the Wychall Farm estate, the Fairway and the roads off it, and connected it back to the A441.

After some digging, it seems there is no documented way of tagging lifeboat stations and lifeboats. Tagwatch also didn't turn up anything especially obvious, so I've created a tagging proposal:

I've tagged the Horton lifeboat station in accordance with this proposal. I may contact the RNLI to see if they will provide a copyright-free list of lifeboat stations and their locations (although I suspect they won't have the lat/lon for them all :( ).

Went for a drive in the Blue Mountains this morning - picked a random bush track at the end of a street and went for a walk. After a few km's of serene bush, I was pleasantly surprised to come across a decent sized dam - it's now a feature in OSM. I bet it's not shown on any other street map!

So to test out my new GPS I walked around Wimmerfield Crescent. Hopefully I magae to get it to join Wimmerfield Avenue correctly.... I discovered that there are a number of side roads off Wimmerfield Crescent which need mapping, but I didn't do those yet as today's primary task was just to prove that I could go right through the process from gathering track data to actually uploading it.

Anyway not a bad start it seems.

I took a little outing at lunch time with my GPS and rode the south end of the Portland Streetcar line, and the new aerial tram up to Pill Hill. Now they are in the map.

A lot of the time overhead photos from various sources aren't perfectly aligned, and may be off by 50–100m. Please make sure to align them by comparing features in the photo with actual GPS tracks in JOSM (or whatever you're using) before you trace rivers and buildings. :)

A lunch-time visit to Exminster has clocked up my 100th track upload for OSM. I have been doing a few trips out to out-lying areas of Exeter which I am unlikely to cycle to on the way home from work. Other areas of Exeter between work and home will get cycled through as I do more rides during the summer.

Fixed the Portland east side Max lightrail tracks from the Steel Bridge to the Gateway Transit Center. I unraveled the interchanges at each end, and fixed the spots where the train tracks were mixed up with the light rail tracks.

On Monday we had the first OSM meet-up in the Johannesburg area http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/South_Africa/JHB_Pub_Meet.

I decided to do some mapping on the way there, namely to fill in any residential roads missing in the Kyalami area. Turned out to be another 60km+ of cycling in hilly terrain.

Turns out that I should think twice before returning to fill in the tracks and footpaths :

Happened to be in Elvetham Heath yesterday (doing some voluntary stuff in the nature reserve in a cunning work scheme to get a day out of the office), and had noticed previously that it was basically missing. (Someone had very helpfully added exactly the road I was looking for however)
So, arriving a little early, I got a few more traces for some of the streets.
Unfortunately I had forgotten to recharge my batteries or to bring a pen, so I could only add a few streets and couldn't note any of the names. Damn! :(
Anyway, at least Elvetham Heath Way now connected between the A323 and A3013.
When I can be bothered, i'll have to head down there again one evening after work and do a bit more.

I've had a Qstarz BT-Q1000P for a week now and I've walked most of my local neighborhood. I'll probably go over it again with a digital camera and map all the stop signs, pedestrian crossings, walkways, bridges, landmarks etc. that I missed the first time around.

As I don't have a GPS on my own I've mainly been tracing the GPS tracks of other people around my area (Akureyri) and tagging stuff.

Ich warte noch auf anständiges Moppedwetter, dann gibts ordentlich Tracks von kleineren Straßen im Schwarzwald und auf der Alb, wo noch jede Menge fehlt.
OSM-mäßig müßte ich dann mal nach Oberndorf a.N. - da fehlt z.T. noch die Bundesstraße!

Ah, more or less every single lake on the Onsala peninsula is now mapped. But wait, the coastline doesn´t look too impressive! Well, I guess I´d better start working on that one as well.

Last Tuesday, at long last got back to Ely to complete the new housing development off King's Avenue and the area around the Princess of Wales hospital.

The former has moved on somewhat since I was last there, including an almost complete new roundabout linking to the B road to Prickwillow. However there is still much housing under construction south of King's Avenue and will need another visit in a year or so to update.

The latter includes some new housing on land sold off by the Ministry of Defence around this old military, now civilian, hospital, but also includes some military housing which I balked at, seeing the notices "this is a prohibited area under the meaning of the Official Secrets Act".

Then continued north to fill in a bit more detail around the small village of Chettisham on my way to Littleport (see separate entry).
