For starting mapping I mapped a part of Buxtehude (Germany).

As Frederick Ramm put it recently, "Look at our current map at zoom level 2 and try not to run away crying." I think I'm finally making progress.

I've built some shell script hacks to work my way through a long list of z8 tiles. It is going to take weeks at my current rate, but that's OK.

I take a swath of z8 tiles, hundreds at a time, and rebuild them. Then I rebuild the z4s they inhabit, and then finally z0. This takes several days per cycle.

I also built some scripts to find and clean "unknown tile" artifacts. I'm better, or at least more comfortable, writing shell scripts than perl, so my scripts tend to be slow and kludgy, but I think it is working.

The "unknown type" tile has a certain color in the text, so I do a quick check for it at z8 using ppmhist. If I find it, then I loop through the z12 tiles inside to see if any match the unknown type tile. If I find one, I replace the image and then use the API to flag it for re-rendering. Replacing the image is a short-term fix but it is making the map at least look a little better, a little sooner. I'm checking both the "tile" layer and the "captionless" layer. If one is unknown and the other is not, I just copy one to the other. If both are unknown, I copy in the mapnik tile. In any case, the image will get replaced by a proper rendered tile soon.

I think I can look at z2 without crying so much now :-)

Une rando en vélo de 140km partant du Palatinat, entrant en Alsace près de Wissembourg et la quittant à Lauterbourg a suivi une trajectoire très zig-zagoïde passant par plusieurs villages et routes qui n'ont pas encore apparu sur OSM. Maintenant le réseau routier dans le rectangle Wissembourg, Soultz-sous-Forêts, Seltz et Lauterbourg, c'est-à-dire sur plus de 300km², est pratiquement complet. Même si parfois j'ai parcouru quelques rues dans certains villages, des quartiers tout récents inclus, il reste encore beaucoup de travail.

Ich habe das Gebiet zwischen Uesdorfer Straße und Immergrünweg gemappt und damit den "weißen Flecken" in diesem kleinen Areal geschlossen.

Außerdem habe ich die fehlenden Seitenstraßen an der Frijthof-Nansen-Straße gemappt und bin dann noch einen Wanderweg abgelaufen. Dank der Arbeit von Tybi und El Diabolo ist das nördliche Stadtgebiet auch erfasst.

Gestern habe ich noch die neue Straße am Keramion über das ex-Cremer&Breuer-Gelände bis zur Holzstraße gemappt.

I am totally stuffed now, all up it was 22km on the first day, and 11km + 600m climb on the 2nd. good fun :).

Recently I entered a few tracks in Newcastle too, nothing major though.

It would be great to finish all those trails then publish a walking map of some sort. Maybe have descriptions of all the walks, lengths, difficulty, transport options etc.

Nach einer Tour von Haltern am See nach Bestwig habe ich ein paar Nebenstraßen am Haarstrang sowie ein paar kleine Orte (Ostbüren, Waltringen, Bremen) ergänzt.

I made my first edit. The process is kinda addictive! I believe I will add more so soon and I will encourage my friends to do so.

Can anyone answer this? When can I see my edits on OSM?

(Finally) mapped and uploaded a big new subdivision in Kingston, Canada. It is still under construction, so I will have to come back in a year or so to map new roads. This one is by far the largest. As usual, the mapping companies got it completely wrong. Navteq has a slightly outdated but otherwise correct map. TeleAtlas, on the other hand, has downright wrong data; its map appears to be based on an old plan of the subdivision. Not only does it show roads that have yet to be built, but it shows a quite different layout from the parts that have been built. It is utterly and completely wrong! (I reported it to them via the online form, but I fully expect that it will take them about 5-10 years to fix, by which time OSM will be fully complete.)

Just started adding some roads in Deception Bay. Fixed coastline and added creek/river and a drain.

Ein bischen kleinkrams im Erlanger süden gemacht. Hauptsächlich Hauszufahrtstrassen ( Service higways...) und ein paar Fahrradwege.

Grad Gedanken darüber gemacht, wie man eigentlich den konflikt löst, das Haupstrassen ja in niedrigenren zoomstufen unverhältnismäßig breit gerendert werden ( damit man sie sieht). Ist daeneben aber nun ein Fahrradweg wird dieser überdeckt. Verschiebt man den Radweg aber der Schönheit wegen nun zur Seite ists natürlich rein geographisch nicht mehr korrekt- und eine Navisoft die auf OSM Karten läuft würde dann sagen "Fahrzeug bzw. Fahrrad nicht auf dem Radweg"...
hmmm....

My mailbox just showed up a mail reporting that my last (and first ;)) GPX file failed to import. I figured that the reason for this is that the timestamps are missing in the track log points.

However, my Garmin GPSmap 60CS **never** records timestamps - how can I upload a track then ??

Weiße Flecken überall :(

Nach dem zweiten Versuch wieder dutzende Kilometer Landstraßen gemappt, da fehlt allerdings noch viel. Wie schon vermutet, braucht auch das Kreuz A1/A553/A61 eine totale Überarbeitung, mein Track zeigt, dass die Fahrspuren und die Abbiegekurven nicht viel mit der Wirklichkeit gemein haben. Leider hatte ich nicht genügend Benzin und Zeit, und das Kreuz nochmal in alle 4 Richtungen zu befahren. Beim nächsten Mal. :)

Generell sind in dieser Region, sowie weiter südlich in der Eifel, noch viele kahle Stellen. Vielleicht hat ja jemand Lust, diese Gebiete näher zu erkunden? ;)

Eigentlich sah das Gebiet ja komplett aus, aber bei nährem Hinsehen doch viele Fehler gefunden. Hauptsächlich Brücken fehlten, und eine Spur der "Hohe Straße" war an einer Stelle doppelt (übereinander) vorhanden (!?).

Eine Sackgasse fehlt noch, die wird morgen mal per GPS erfasst :)

Am Donnerstag Esch erschlossen, gestern in Worringen einige fehlende Straßen hinzugefügt und heute Fühlingen erradelt. Mit Esch und Fühlingen sind zwei größere weiße Flecken ausgemerzt, wobei sicherlich noch ein paar Straßen und vor allem POI fehlen. Vor allem Sackgassen fehlen, da die Leute eh schon immer komisch geguckt haben.
